Why Dermal Fillers Might Be Right for You

Why Dermal Fillers Might Be Right for You

It might be true that wrinkles and sagging skin are a natural part of aging. But that doesn’t mean you have to sit back and let it happen. With dermal fillers, you can plump up wrinkles and restore lost volume to keep aging in check — and to feel more confident in the way you look.

Led by board-certified dermatologists Todd Perkins, MD, and Edward Stolar, MD, our team at Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center offers several types of dermal fillers to help you get the natural-looking results you want.

Here’s when dermal fillers make sense and how they can help you look as young as you feel.

How dermal fillers work

Dermal fillers are special solutions that we inject into your skin, either directly into lines and wrinkles or in areas where your natural volume is decreasing. Once under your skin, these fillers go to work filling in lines, folds, and even scars.

In areas like your cheeks, your lips, or under your eyes, fillers can work wonders to restore volume that’s lost as you age, plumping up the area to smooth it. The added fullness also provides a gentle lift to the lower areas of your face, reducing sagging around your jowls and mouth area.

We use fillers that contain hyaluronic acid, a moisture-retaining acid that occurs naturally in your skin. Hyaluronic acid helps your skin hold in moisture for a soft, natural fullness that lasts longer.

Fillers vs. Botox®

Because fillers and Botox are both injectable cosmetic products, you may think they’re interchangeable when it comes to smoothing out wrinkles. But actually, they treat two different types of wrinkles.

Dermal fillers plump up wrinkles and folds that are the result of sun- and age-related skin changes, smoking, genetics, and poor nutrition (so-called static wrinkles). Botox treats dynamic wrinkles, lines and folds that form when you smile, frown, or make another facial expression.

Many of our patients opt to have both Botox and fillers to treat both types of wrinkles, smoothing out lines and folds from forehead to chin. This combination treatment is sometimes referred to as a liquid facelift — smooth, youthful-looking skin without the downsides of surgery.

When dermal fillers are the right choice

So how can you tell when you’re ready for fillers? In general, fillers are a great option for you if you want to:

Of course, the best way to learn if fillers are right for you is to schedule a consultation with our team. We evaluate your skin’s structure, your facial anatomy, and other factors that can play a role in facial aging. Then, we work with you to create a plan to help you achieve your goals.
