Acne Scar Treatment

There are many new and exciting treatments for acne scars. For all of these treatments, the goal is to induce collagen remodeling through micro-damage to the dermis (middle layer of skin). It can often be approached with a simple, limited down time, lasers, micro-needle, Fractionated Radio-frequency treatments, and TCA Cross after which patients can return immediately to work or in several days.

Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin. Results can include improved texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks. Microneedling may also be combined with a topical treatment, like PRP (platelet rich plasma) or another vitamin-rich serum.

Fractionated Radio-frequency treatment with Venus Viva is a non-surgical device that uses fractional radio frequency to treat wrinkles, acne scars, large pores, uneven texture, stretch marks, and pigment irregularity. A hand-held device sends energy below the surface of the skin, which heats the cells and stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. Three to four treatments are usually needed to achieve desired results. TCA “CROSS” technique is performed by Dr. Perkins to treat “ice pick” scars. Deeper “boxcar” scars can be significantly improved with a simple, quick procedure called subcision. Treatments such as microdermabrasion, and superficial peels are usually of no value in treating acne scarred skin.

Drs. Perkins and Stolar specialize in treating acne scarred skin, and can provide you with a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
